How to Apply
We ask that you send by email a letter of inquiry () prior to a full grant proposal. Please send the LOI as soon as possible, but no later than July 15, 2008 if you are interested in our second funding cycle.   If we are interested in finding out further information, we will contact you.  Please note that we will look at grant proposals bi-annually April 1 and September 1, so please submit your email of inquiry with enough time for us to respond back to you and for you to submit a full proposal.  Your email of inquiry should include:

  •          The purpose of the project
  • Problems and issues the proposed project will address

  •          Brief description of your organization, including tax status
  • Estimated overall budget for both the project and the organization

  • Period of time for which funds are requested

  •          Qualifications of those who will be engaged in the project

We are happy to review a grant proposal submitted to another organization (recognizing the amount of effort it takes to write grants), provided that your proposal contains the following:

  •  Names and CVs of those engaged in the project

  • Names of the board of directors

  •          Full budget of the organization as well as the project if there is a project
  •  Present means of support and status of identified funding sources

  •  Legal and tax status

We will fund up to three consecutive years, provided that the organization has met it benchmarks and continues to do innovative work.  We do ask the grantee to take a two year break after three years of funding.

We will not fund capital campaigns generally.

Our grant dollars will range from $1,000 to $25,000.  We will consider multi-year grant requests from organizations we have funded before.  No grant award shall exceed 10% of an organization's budget.

If the proposal is being considered for a grant, the approval process is generally completed within three months and will likely include a site visit. Activities supported by grants and program-related investments must be charitable, educational or scientific, as defined under the appropriate provisions of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations. The foundation monitors grants through regular financial and narrative reports submitted by the grantee.  All grantees will enter a grant agreement with HSF.

HSF will not fund:

  • Projects initiated or mandated by any order of government
  • Political lobbying
  • Litigation
  •  Capital campaigns
